Featured Hooper of the Month – Melanie Lyons

Melanie discovered hoop dance in late 2006 while searching the internet looking for a theme for her fitness routine to perform in the 2007 Fitness Universe Pageant.  After seeing a demo online, Melanie ordered an instructional DVD and began learning to hoop.

Melanie also recently played Roller Derby in Birmingham for awhile, setting the hoop aside. After a year or so passed she decided to attend one of Hoop for Fitness’ classes and gained a renewed interest in hooping.  After consistently attending classes, hoop jams, and practicing regularly she has advanced and learned a lot.  In fact, she is combining some of the advanced off-body hoop dance moves with her artistic figure skating.  This is a challenging endeavor, as skating and hooping are totally different flows and movements.  None the less, Melanie can be seen at Skates 280 doing just that. Melanie is also learning to twirl a baton to prepare her to hoop with fire and sticks.  Melanie really enjoys hoop dance and performing, but it’s the friends she made while learning that has made it so much fun and worth all the hours of practicing.  After all, you can never have too many hoop friends to help motivate you to stay active!
